What Is Your Favorite Fall Memory

Autumn is a beautiful time of year. The leaves are falling from the trees, hoodie weather is in, and everything just seems so much calmer and relaxed. Everyone has some kind of good fall memories. Whether it’s making pumpkin pie with your grandma or going to the park with your best friend. Even just staying inside and watching a movie, or if it was ten years ago or yesterday.

Oak Hills has signed up in almost every hallway, and they should not go unnoticed. Whether they are about empowerment or encouragement to seek help whenever needed, they matter. In the hallways, you may not have time to read each and every sign or you may not notice them. When I first came to Oak Hills my freshman year I never saw anything like these posters in the halls or maybe I never noticed them and it is very important to have this knowledge that we do care and we can make a change to better the school as a whole. It is important to have someone listen or to have someone believe in you, not everyone feels like they have a safe space or one person that they can go to, it is important to have the knowledge that everyone and anyone can have at least one person. Every day we can get better and stronger together if we support each other and offer each other help, it may be hard to open up to anyone and when people do they may not know how to express feelings. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and everyone is different but we as a student body can come together and make sure that it is an amazing school for everyone because if you need help you should have access to get that help when is needed and by someone you trust. On a lot of the posters in the hallway there is a number that you can access by text which is totally anonymous and below a lot of the numbers it says “Get the help you need” and encouraging statements, one thing can make a change and if they are noticed by anyone and everyone who needs it, we can make a change! Use that hashtag #ifeelsafeOHHS.

Volunteer Opportunites

With the immense amount of clubs offered here at Oak Hills High School, volunteer opportunities are very open to students. Clubs such as National Honor Society, Key Club, and Community Service Club offer an abundant of volunteer openings. Other organizations or sports will also offer volunteer openings such as basketball, track and field, football, and more. Key Club allows students who aren’t exactly a part of National Honor Society a chance to help the community. National Honor Society is an organization who takes pride in their four pillars. The four pillars are Leadership, Character, Service, and Scholar. National Honor Society is an organization who focuses on volunteer work within the community. To be in National Honor society, you must be a sophomore who gets accepted into the association. Community Service Club loves to go out in the community and get things done. Their focus is on volunteer work around the Oak Hills area.

Sports also offer volunteer possibilities as well. For example, if you like to run and like volunteer work, join the track team! The track team often volunteers at the youth track meets and helps out with the children. They also help out with their biggest track meet of the year; Best of the West. All of the schools from the Westside come to Oak Hills and compete in track events. The students help run the event, which can count for volunteer hours if you are in NHS. Sports such as basketball and football take pride in student volunteers as well. The football team loves to coach the Little Highlanders as well as the Youth Athletics at Oak Hills. Therefore, Oak Hills has an abundant amount of opportunities. So, get out and help the community!

Top 5 Fall Fashion Trends

It is easy to say that with the change of the season, comes different trends and new styles that are popular within society. New trends are taking over Oak Hills and is shaping the way that we dress. The first major fashion trend that has made a comeback: Scrunchies. Scrunchies are back from the 90s and it can be seen by every high schooler right now, that they are being worn on the wrist or in the hair.

Another fashion trend within Oak Hills High School is the Birkenstock. Even though they have been worn for some time, they are still immensely worn by high schoolers. Even with the cold weather approaching, it is not rare to see people rocking the socks with the stocks. Socks and sandals are “the move”, am I right or am I right?

Oversized sweaters are taking over the halls of Oak Hills High School. There is something about wearing an oversized sweater that makes fall more enjoyable. It could be the comfort or the warmth that makes wearing an oversized sweater worthwhile. If you want a deal on an oversized sweater, check out Old Navy, Forever 21, and TJ Maxx.

Wanna up your shoe game? Try out some crocs with Halloween socks. People are rocking the croc with adding a fall touch to their outfit. If you wanna get a little crazier, you can even add some jibbitz to your crocs. People are getting even more creative and instead of wearing Halloween socks, are wearing Christmas socks. Tis the season!

Oh, the sweatshirt. A lovely creation that allows you to snuggle up while “enjoying” your school day. Sweatshirts are the go-to and allow you to be comfy and cozy. Nothing screams fall like adding a warm sweatshirt to your wardrobe. Sweatshirts with a top knot bun will for sure make your heart flutter.

You’re never too old to dress up and go trick or treat. But as we get older, we have to work harder for our candy. So that's why this year we must bring our A game and have the best costumes of 2018. Whether you’re going with your significant other, or alone, we have some great ideas that will guarantee you the biggest sack of candy ever.

If you know, then you know. Kim Possible and Ron were the power couple of our childhood. Imitate their great style and break out the cargos.

Danny and Sandy when they reversed roles. What a great moment. Capture it by recreating their looks and buy lots of hairspray.

It’s Flo from progressive. This savvy costume is a must. Plus you can save and bundle your home and auto while getting candy!

Girls, this is for you. Be as strong as the boys, rocking a Rosy the Riveter outfit, and get all that candy girl. This is your year.

AP Psychology Donations

AP Psychology teachers, Mrs. Rice, and Mrs. Hogel have come together to give their students an opportunity for a free-spirited and lively way to participate in the course. Their idea consists of a gameboard paper and a students’ willfulness of getting their work done efficiently to receive an award for their efforts. It is much like the game of Candyland, where after each assignment is finished, the student will earn a stamp, eventually bringing them to the end. The more points a student earns, the closer they are to finishing assignments and the game board itself. If students fail to complete an assignment by its due date or score lower than an 80% on a quiz, students are able to redeem themselves by completing outside projects to show they comprehend the material learned and can apply them to real-world situations. The overall goal for students’ by participating in this activity is the reward of gift cards. Students with the most points will earn a gift card to different restaurants and stores, etc. This technique helps motivate students to push themselves harder while having some fun in class. Hello fellow high schoolers, yes, the time has come. It’s Homecoming season. There are only a few days until the big day. The day where guys and gals dress their best to show off how good they look for that special someone. Now, Homecoming can be fun either way if you have a date or not, but only if you make it fun. Homecoming can also be one of the most stressful things a high schooler can go through, especially if your shoes don’t fit or your salon cancels your hair appointment. This year is going to be the year people. You are going to dominate Homecoming and walk into the school as if you are the best looking there. To do this, one must prep the night before Homecoming peacefully and soothingly.

How To Get Ready For Homecoming 2018, The Night Before

There are many things to do the night before Homecoming to make sure you have all of your essentials, and to make getting ready successfully. Yes, you want Homecoming to be successful, but you also want to make it a night to remember; high school flies by.

The Night Before

On the night before Homecoming, your group of friends and peers, heck, maybe even your whole family should come over and spend time together to create an already exciting atmosphere for the day of Homecoming. That night should be full of enjoyment and happiness to keep you calm and collected. Your friends and family should relax by watching a movie. May I suggest a chick flick? Get some popcorn ready and enjoy a movie everyone can enjoy. You also may want to have a spa night. To be more precise, all you and your friends should do face masks, manicure and pedicure, and hair. While doing this activity, you get to bond with your friends and family. Who doesn’t love that? Make sure your outfits are picked out and set somewhere so your little puppy doesn’t get ahold of it! Makeup is considered a must for Homecoming and you may want to practice it the night before so you know what you want to do for the day of, so you're not just winging it. Follow these steps students, they will benefit you like no other!

Homecoming is a time to remember where you dance and sing with your friends until your feet are about to fall off. These tips to do the night before are supposed to make your lives easier so stress is not overriding the fun. Don’t get me wrong, stress can be good so you are actually getting things done like getting your dress on time. But, make sure you don’t forget the meaning of Homecoming: have fun. If you want to prepare the night before, do it. If you want to just go with your friends rather than a date, do it. If you want to dance the night away, do it. Homecoming is about the joy of getting together with your peers and enjoying a night of fun. Make sure to prepare the night before, it will benefit you immensely.

Game With A Cop

On Thursday, April 12th, Ms. Jennifer Harris and Mr. Robert Klotz accompanied a group of Oak Hills freshman and sophomores to the "Game with a Cop" program at the Cincinnati Reds, sponsored by the Hamilton County Sheriff's office. The "Game with a Cop" program was started to positively impact youth in our communities and build trust with local law enforcement. The students had VIP status for the evening! They got to sit in a luxury suite, were treated to a catered dinner, and even given ball caps and rally towels throughout the game. During the game, students were able to sit and talk with Deputy Mike Robison and break down the misconceptions students have regarding police officers while building positive Police / Community Relations. Deputy Mike Robison spoke with the students about reaching their goals. The students had a wonderful time. Freshman, Dylan Walters, said, "I had the best time at the game. I enjoyed talking with Deputy Robison. The coolest part was sitting in those comfortable seats! I never got to sit in seats like that before." Even though the Reds didn't bring home a win, both Mr. Klotz and Ms. Harris believe it was a win for their students. "This is an important investment in our students, school, and community. It was time well spent," said Mr. Klotz.

2018 Congressional Art Award Competitors

“An Artistic Discovery,” a nationwide high school visual art competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute, aims to showcase the artistic talents of high school students. This annual competition is open to students in grades 9-12 who are residents of Ohio’s First Congressional District. All artwork will be displayed, and winners announced, in May at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
